This summary is for convenience; the full policy below is what applies.
Open Field is an app for organizing pickup soccer. Players create and join groups, schedule events, say whether they're in, and build a player card from the games they play. This policy explains what information Open Field collects, how it's used and shared, and the choices you have.
Open Field is run by David Coggin, an individual developer ("we", "us"). If you have a question about this policy, email decosdevlab@gmail.com.
1. Information We Collect
Information you give us
- Account: your email address and password. Your password is stored in hashed form by our backend provider; we can't see it.
- Profile: your display name and username. We create your username from your first name and four random digits; you can change your display name at any time and your username once every 30 days.
- Player details (optional): the positions you play, your level, and your birth year. You can skip these during sign-up and change them later in Profile.
- Groups you run: the group's name, description, rules, who it's for (level and players), whether it's public or private, and its home venue: the venue's name and street address (street, city, state and ZIP code).
- Events you schedule: title, date and time, venue, field, format, length, number of players and waitlist, who can play (level, players and age range), cost per player, and notes.
- Reports and blocks: when you report a player, group or event, we receive your report and the reason you give. When you block a player, we store that you blocked them.
Information created when you use Open Field
- Memberships: the groups you're in, your role (organizer or player), and when you joined.
- Answers: your answers to events (in, maybe or out) and when you gave them, including your place on a waitlist.
- Attendance and thumbs up: whether you checked in at an event or were marked by the organizer as having played, and the thumbs up you give and receive after games.
- Player card: your card's stats (games, reliability, experience, streak, sportsmanship and hosting) are calculated from your attendance, answers, thumbs up and the events and groups you organize.
- Player Code: a random code, shown as a QR code on your Player Code screen, that lets an organizer add you to their group when you show it to them. You can reset it at any time.
- Invite codes: each group has a random invite code that players can use to join it.
- Security records: to stop people from guessing codes, we record the time of each wrong invite or player code you enter, and delete these records after a day.
Technical information
Like most online services, our backend provider keeps server logs of requests to our servers, which can include your IP address, device and app information, and the time of the request. These logs are used to keep the service running and secure, and are kept for a limited time.
What we don't collect
Open Field does not use advertising, analytics or tracking tools. We don't collect your contacts, photos, phone number, payment details or browsing history, and we don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
2. Location and Camera
Open Field asks for your location only while you're using the app (the While Using the App setting). You can turn it off at any time in your iPhone's Settings; the app still works, but without nearby results, check-in or city autofill.
- Nearby events and groups: when you open Discover or look for groups, your location is sent with the search so we can find public events and groups near you. It is used for that search and is not stored.
- Checking in: when you tap Check In at an event, your location is sent so our server can confirm you're within about half a kilometer (a third of a mile) of the venue. It is used for that check and is not stored; only the fact that you checked in is saved.
- Venues: the venue address you type for an event or a group's home venue is looked up with Apple's mapping service to place it on the map. Its map position is stored, rounded to about 110 meters (360 feet).
- Address autofill: when you create a group, your location is used to fill in the city, state and ZIP code of the home venue for you. Your location itself is not stored.
Camera: Open Field uses the camera only when you choose to scan a QR code (a group's invite code or a player's code). Scanning happens on your phone; no photos or video are taken or sent.
3. Information Kept Only on Your Phone
Some information never leaves your phone:
- Your sign-in session, stored encrypted with a key kept in the iPhone Keychain.
- Your answers during sign-up, until your account is created.
- Your settings and choices: appearance, map style, distance units, search distance, filters, searches, the last page you had open, and which events you've already seen.
- Event reminders you set, which are scheduled as notifications on your phone.
- Images of your player card that you choose to share, which are made on your phone and passed to the iPhone share sheet. Where they go is up to you.
4. How We Use Information
- To create and run your account and sign you in.
- To provide Open Field's features: groups, events, answers, waitlists, rosters, invites, check-in, Who Played, thumbs up, your player card and your game history.
- To show public events and groups near you, and to suggest games and groups that suit your level and age.
- To keep Open Field safe: to review reports, remove content and accounts that break our Terms of Service, apply blocks and removals from groups, filter offensive words, and prevent abuse such as code guessing.
- To answer your questions and requests.
- To comply with the law and protect the rights and safety of our players and others.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
5. Who Can See What
Open Field is a social app: some of your information is shown to other players so that groups and games work.
| Information | Who can see it |
|---|---|
| Display name, username, positions, level, player card stats, when you joined Open Field | Anyone signed in to Open Field |
| Birth year | Only you |
| Email address | Only you (never shown to other players) |
| Player Code | Only you, and anyone you show it to |
| A public group's details, home venue address, roster and invite code | Anyone signed in to Open Field |
| A private group's details, roster and invite code | Members of that group |
| A public (drop-in) event, who's going, who played and thumbs up | Anyone signed in to Open Field |
| A group-only event, who's going, who played and thumbs up | Members of that group |
| Players you've blocked | Only you (blocked players aren't told) |
| Reports you send | Only us |
6. Service Providers and Sharing
We use these service providers to run Open Field. They process information only to provide their services to us, under their own privacy and security commitments:
- Supabase hosts our database, accounts and server functions. Your information is stored on servers in the United States (Virginia).
- Resend sends Open Field's account emails (the codes to confirm your email and reset your password), so it receives your email address and the email's content. It's based in the United States.
- Apple provides the map in Discover and the service that turns venue addresses into map positions (and your location into a city, state and ZIP code for autofill). Apple's handling is covered by Apple's privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if required by law or legal process, to protect the safety of any person, to address fraud or security issues, or as part of a transfer of the app to a new owner (who would remain bound by this policy). We don't share your information with anyone else.
7. How Long We Keep Information
We keep your information for as long as you have an account. If you start creating an account but never confirm your email, we delete it after 24 hours. When you delete your account (Profile → Delete Account), we delete:
- your account, email address and profile (name, username, player details and Player Code);
- your group memberships, answers, attendance and thumbs up (given and received);
- the reports you sent and the players you blocked.
Events you scheduled in groups you don't run stay for those groups, without your name as the organizer. If you run a group, you need to hand it over or delete it before deleting your account; deleting a group deletes its events and everyone's answers to them. Server logs and backups kept by our backend provider are deleted on their normal schedule. We may keep information longer where the law requires it.
If you leave a group or are removed from it, your answers to its upcoming events are removed, while your past answers and attendance stay so the group's and players' stats don't change. If an organizer removes you from a group, we keep a record so you can't rejoin it.
8. Your Choices and Rights
- See and change your information: edit your display name, positions, level and birth year in Profile at any time. Organizers can edit or delete their groups and events.
- Delete your account: in the app, Profile → Delete Account.
- Location, camera and notifications: turn them on or off in your iPhone's Settings.
- Block and report: block a player, or report a player, group or event, from its page.
- Ask us: email decosdevlab@gmail.com to request a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it. We'll respond within 45 days and may need to confirm that the request comes from your account's email address.
Depending on where you live in the United States (for example California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut or other states with privacy laws), you may have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to access, correct or delete it, and to opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising. We don't sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising. You can exercise any of these rights by emailing us, and we won't treat you differently for doing so.
Do Not Track: Open Field doesn't track you across other apps or websites, so it doesn't respond differently to Do Not Track signals.
9. Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit (HTTPS), access rules on our database so each player can only read and change what they're allowed to, an encrypted sign-in session on your phone, and limits on code guessing. No service can be completely secure, so we can't guarantee the security of your information, but we work to protect it and will tell you if a breach affects you as the law requires.
10. Age Requirement
Open Field is for players aged 16 and over, and isn't directed to children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 16, we'll delete it. If you believe a child is using Open Field, please email us.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as Open Field changes. We'll change the "Last updated" date above, and for significant changes we'll let you know in the app before they take effect.
